Accommodation

Are you thinking about heading north for work but worried about finding accommodation? Finding accommodation anywhere in the nation right now seems to be a challenge, but we have some tips to get you started.

Plan Ahead

If you have secured a position and you’re about to start travelling north, ask your employer. Some farms have onsite accommodation options, while other growers might know of share houses that their current employees use. Your employer might also have an existing relationship with local real estate agents and can put you in touch with the best person for your needs.

Consider Short Term

Many budget holiday apartments and caravan parks will offer affordable weekly rates in self-contained accommodation such as units or cabins. The best place to start is the local tourism organisation website or Visitor Information Centre. You can also use Google Maps to check out what is available close to your work and reach out. While this may be a short-term option it will give you the chance to meet other workers and explore the area to find more longer term options.

Ask Your Work Mates

When you start work, ask your new work mates where they are staying. Often working holiday makers team up to find shared accommodation, or they might know of rooms available with other travellers. Our harvest workers collect a wealth of information on all the different aspects of farm work, accommodation and living in North Queensland and are often the first stop for finding out what you need to know.

Bring Your Own

Many working holiday makers choose to invest in a camper van, camper trailer or even a good tent. This is the perfect option if you’re planning to explore North Queensland and pick up work along the way. It will also keep your accommodation costs to a minimum! Embarking on your working holiday in this style is a great way to meet new people and ensure flexibility with your working and travel plans.

Get in Touch

Most towns and regions across North Queensland have local and regional tourism organisations you can contact to enquire about accommodation options. You can drop into the accredited information centres – just like the Visitor Information Centre located at the Big Mango, or give them a call.
