Our Top Tips for Starting a job in Ag

August 22, 2022 by admin

Its your first day on the job, what to expect and what to prepare

Starting a new job in a new industry can be a little daunting, but rest assured, our growers are willing and ready to teach you all the tricks of the trade! Here are a few things to keep in mind when you start your new job.

Get a good night’s sleep

Chances are you’ll be on your feet most of the day, so you’ll want all the energy you can find. You might also be doing tasks that use different muscles in your body and you could feel a little sore. Take it easy in the evenings, have a healthy, filling meal and skip the beers when you have an early start.

Wear clean, comfortable and sun-safe clothes

If you know you’ll be working outside, sun-safe clothing is a must. The winter sunshine in North Queensland still packs a punch, so cover up with long sleeves and pants and a wide-brimmed hat. If you are required to wear work boots, your employer will let you know.

If you’re shed bound clean tidy clothing is essential as well as comfortable shoes like joggers. Leave the jewellery at home and make sure your hair is tied back.

Take a healthy lunch and plenty of water

Your first few days will fly by as you learn your new role, and we can guarantee you’ll be hungry! Make sure your lunch is satisfying as it will get you through the rest of the day. Drinking plenty of water is essential to prevent dehydration. Many newcomers are surprised at just how warm it still is here in winter.

Prepare to have some fun!

You’re about to meet some great people and find some new friends! Many working holiday makers leave with friends for life and enjoy travelling together on more adventures and to different regions. Enjoy the experience and soak up all you can.
